How did you find BMX? How old were you?
For as long as I can remember I have always had a BMX Bike. From being a young kid of five years-old.
What do you love most about BMX?
Definitely the lifestyle and the traveling. I’ve met so many amazing people and seen so many amazing places just through riding my bike.
What do you like least about BMX?
Most likely the injuries one attains from trying to learn and improve. Then not being able to ride due to the injuries.
Best place BMX has taken you?
Australia (1998),The USA (2001) & The United Kingdom(2004, 2005)
Worst place BMX has taken you?
Bloemfontein, South Africa
What do you miss most when you are traveling?
Well these days I don’t get to travel much due to having a 9-5 job so when I do get to travel not much is missed.
If you could only ride at one place forever, where would it be?
Chertsey Trails (UK) that place is mind blowing.
What riders have influenced you the most?
Back in the late 90’s when I was only Dirt orientated there is no doubt that the rider that influenced me the most was Corey Nastazio! Now that riding has become so much more diverse I enjoy the likes of Mike Aitkin, Chase Hawk & Corey Bohan to name a few.
What are your interests outside of riding?
I enjoy fishing, both deep sea and shore fishing. Tennis is also something I do whilst not riding.
Who were your heroes as a kid?
Corey Nastazio
Who are your heroes now?
Now I don’t really have any “Heroes” but rather take an interest in many different riders and their talents.
If you could ride with anyone who would it be?
Mike Aitkin, He seems to make everything he rides look so enjoyable.
If you were stuck on a desert island what three things would you bring with you??
Juliette (My Girl), sun protection & many matches to make fires with.
If you weren’t a BMX pro, what other profession would you be involved in?
Currently I have a job as a Sports Marketing Co-coordinator and athlete manager. I deal with Athlete & event sponsorship on behalf of a major South African clothing retailer Mr Price for their RED clothing brand so I guess that?
What is your favorite music/band/artist?
Alternate and my band choice is Smashing Pumpkins
What is your favorite color?
Grey
What is your favorite food?
Pizza with Bacon, Avocado and Feta cheese topping.
What is the last thing you spend more than R1000 on?
TAX repayments!
When was the last time you were seriously scared?
Not Sure?
What was your first bike set up and how has it changed?
My first real dirt bike was Huffy TL88 Back in 1999. It was all 48H, triple walled wheels etc. Now days I run a Mongoose Fraction frame with predominantly SNAFU Components. It’s much lighter and way better than the Huffy : )
Describe your perfect day.
This would be when I am on leave from work; I would wake up without the aid of an alarm clock, head down to the Durban concrete skate park on the beach and have a morning session. The grab some lunch and head up to the Giba gorge trails and ride till dark! All in a perfect summers day.
What is one thing that people might not know about you?
I used to be crazy about playing rugby and I guess you could have called me a jock back then!
What was your most embarrassing moment?
For me this would be doing school plays when we were kids up in front of many people. I am not into that sort of thing.
If you won $500 million dollars today – what would you do with it?
I would take my riding friends on a global BMX trip and visit every riding spot we have ever wanted to. After that I would start up and manage a World GP Motocross team.
One place you have to see before you die.
I would like to travel Europe more as there is so much to see there. Hard to pinpoint one location?
Best advice you’ve ever been given.
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
What’s one thing you could change about your life if you could?
Don’t know?
If you could back into time and do one thing over – what would it be?
I would have stayed in the USA when I lived there in 2001.
If you could spend an afternoon with anyone – past, present or future – who would it be?
My late cousin.
Peanut or Regular M&M’s?
Regular
Favorite Movie?
Anchor Man!
What’s one thing you always take with you when you travel?
My iPod
Any advice for the young ‘uns coming into BMX?
|
Yes, just to keep at it and not to worry about getting sponsored and consumed in matters like that. You find that you can very easily become distracted from the main reason you started riding in the begging. Try your best, have fun and enjoy it and what will be will be… |
What was the worst car you ever owned?
|
A Lime Green 1984 BMW 518i, I still to this day cannot believe girls allowed me to pick them up in that car for a date! |
If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and why?
|
He might not be so much a celebrity but I would like to meet the founder of the energy drink Red Bull. Reason being I am intrigued as to how he came up with his concept and implemented it to become such a major global brand that is involved with many sports I enjoy. |
