Matty Cranmer Races Tests Limits by Racing BMX and Cyclocross in the Same Weekend

Mongoose pro Matty Cranmer seems to enjoy torturing himself. I mean why else would you subject yourself to three straight days of racing in different cycling disciplines?  Well, Matty did just that when he raced two days of BMX at the Sunshine State Nationals in Sarasota, FL, before driving up to Swamp Cross, a cyclocross race, in Gainesville, FL, for day 3.

The USA BMX Sunshine State Nationals was the start of the race weekend, and  Matty had a crash during practice that messed up one of his shoe clips which caused him to come unclipped way more than he wanted. Even with these mishaps, Matty was still able to qualify for the UCI World Championships in Rock Hill, SC in March.

On Saturday he made the mains and ended up taking 5th in 26-35 Expert. Right after the race, he drove three hours north to Gainesville to rest up a little for the Swamp Cross race.

On Sunday Matty went from his 20” Title Team Pro BMX bike to his 700c Guide Sport adventure bike. After a mishap with registration Matty ended up in the Pro class, but always down for a challenge he just went with it. After a grueling 53 minutes of riding, including two :30 second runs in mud sections, Matty got on the podium with 3rd place!  We won’t lie, there were only three pros in the class but after checking times he would have won the Open class he originally entered.

We really don’t think Matty was torturing himself – He just loves it stating, "Racing bikes was my first passion and this weekend brought me back to the start of it all. Being surrounded by like-minded bike riders who just want to play on bikes in the dirt, mud and go fast was so rad. I’d do this every week if I could!"
